Practical Tips for Gondola Tours
Iconic Venetian Transport or a Must-Do Experience?
Since the 11th century, the gondola has shaped the very image of Venice.
Once used as a water taxi or as a luxurious “limousine” for noble families, it remains today one of the city’s most enduring symbols.
It may seem like a tourist experience, but no other boat offers such an authentic view of Venice. Seen from the water, the city reveals itself at a gentle pace, guided by the steady rhythm of the oar in the hands of an expert gondolier, who keeps an ancient tradition alive.
Below you’ll find some practical information about gondola rides. But if you want to know why it’s something you should do with your kids, please read our post “A Gondola Ride to Discover Venice with Your Family.”
All you need to know about gondola rides
How much is a gondola ride?
In 2026, a private gondola ride costs €90 per gondola until 7:00 PM.
After 7:00 PM, the price is €110 per gondola (maximum 5 people).
How long is a gondola ride?
A standard gondola ride lasts about 30 minutes, but longer rides can be arranged on request.
How many passengers can fit in a gondola??
For security reasons, a gondola can carry a maximum of 5 people.
Do small children count as passengers within the maximum number of five?
Yes, they do.
Small children also count as passengers, and the maximum number of people allowed on one gondola is five, regardless of age, for safety and insurance reasons.
Where can I leave my child’s stroller during the gondola ride?
Strollers cannot be taken on board. They can usually be left safely at the gondola station while you are on the ride, but this is always at your own responsibility. We recommend taking valuables with you.
Do I need to book in advance?
You don’t really need to book a gondola ride in advance.
However, if you prefer to secure it ahead of time, you’ll need to book through Gondolieri Travel, and a booking commission will apply.
Keep in mind that when you book in advance, the ride is non-flexible:
if it rains, you’ll still have to take the gondola ride, and it will start from the specific stazio you selected. You won’t be able to change the location or skip the ride if you later decide differently or find yourself in another part of the city during your stay.
It’s usually better to choose one of the smaller stazi, as they tend to be less crowded and less affected by large tour groups.
Just be patient: you may need to wait a little, but the experience is often more relaxed and enjoyable.
Can we share the gondola with other people?
Some travel agencies offer shared gondola rides, but keep in mind that a gondola can carry up to 5 people.
Unless you are a group of three, this option is usually not convenient, as agencies add their own commission to the price.
What's a gondola serenate?
It’s a unique experience where you enjoy a traditional gondola ride through the canals, accompanied by live music from a singer and musician.
Is it a bit kitsch? Well… yes, kind of! And it must be booked through a travel agency.
Do Venetians still use gondolas?
Sure they do! For example, when they get married, at the end of the ceremony… and sometimes when they need to cross the Grand Canal and are far from one of the four bridges. This short trip is called a Gondola Traghetto. It costs just a couple of euros, and the ride only lasts a few minutes — just enough time for two gondoliers to ferry the boat across to the other side. Since this type of gondola can carry many passengers, you usually have to stand during the crossing. Afraid of falling into the water?! Oh no!! It may not be romantic, but it’s fun
Locals still rely on this shortcut: you can try it too, but please let them go first!
Is a gondola tour with a guide worth it?
Since a gondola ride lasts only about 30 minutes, most people usually prefer to enjoy the atmosphere in peace rather than listening to explanations.
The route is quite short, and on a gondola it often feels nicer to simply soak in the essence of Venice — the silence, the reflections on the water, the slow rhythm of the city.
It’s a different story with a water taxi tour: it lasts longer, covers a wider area, and gives the guide time to point out palaces, districts, and stories that would otherwise go unnoticed. But if you really insist, we’re always happy to join you on a gondola ride — after all, it’s an experience that is always magical, even for a guide!!
