How to get to Venice city centre from the airport
Venice Airport is named after the most famous Venetian in history, a true travel expert who managed to reach as far as Beijing 850 years ago on a simple galley: the legendary Marco Polo!
If he managed not to get lost on such an extraordinary adventure, you will certainly be able to find your way from the airport to the city centre too… even if, at first glance, it may seem complicated.
This is the location of the Ventian airport:
You have two main options to reach Venice from the airport: by water or by land. The best choice depends mainly on where your accommodation is located, but budget can also make a difference.
TRANSFER BY WATER
Arriving in Venice by boat is definitely more evocative: you immediately dive into the lagoon atmosphere, almost as if you were entering another dimension! Children absolutely love it.
The boarding point is the same for both private and public boats and is about 10 minutes from the terminal.
How to reach the boarding area
- From the Arrivals area (ground floor), go up to the first floor and follow the signs for “Water Transport”. Thanks to the moving walkway, you will reach the dock in just a few minutes. Then go back down to ground level by lift or stairs.
If you prefer to walk outside, stay on the ground floor, exit the terminal and follow the signs for “Darsena” along the covered walkway. At the end, leave the luggage trolley you used for your bags.
PRIVATE WATER TAXI
This is the most comfortable solution, especially if you have a lot of luggage or arrive late in the evening. It is also more fun (unless someone suffers from seasickness!) and a fantastic way to start your holiday: you immediately experience the uniqueness of Venice. Children usually go crazy for a ride on a fast boat!
You can be taken directly to your hotel if it has a water door, or at least very close to it.
(Only in cases of acqua alta might it be necessary to stop a bit farther away, but this doesn’t happen often.)
- Duration: on average 20–30 minutes, depending on where you are staying
- Cost: the most expensive option, about €160 for up to 6 people (2026 rate, to be confirmed with the company)
Booking: private water taxis must be booked online; several companies operate this service
SHARED WATER TAXI
Sharing a taxi with other passengers is a cheaper alternative, but it is most convenient if you are travelling as a couple or a group of three.

PUBLIC WATER TRANSPORT: ALILAGUNA
Public transport is a much cheaper option, although it requires a bit more planning: the stop may not be close to your accommodation and the boat is slower than a taxi.
The public boat company operating from the airport is called Alilaguna.

TRANSFER BY LAND
If you prefer to reach Venice by land, simply exit the terminal: you will easily find both bus stops and the taxi rank.
In both cases, you will arrive at Piazzale Roma, the point where roads end and canals begin. From there, you will still need to take a public boat (vaporetto) or a water taxi to reach your accommodation… unless you are travelling light and don’t mind crossing several bridges with your luggage!

TAXI
A taxi to Piazzale Roma takes about 20 minutes and costs around €40 (2025 rate).

If you are more than 4 people or have a lot of luggage, you may need a minibus with driver:

BUS
Two companies operate buses from the airport to Venice (Piazzale Roma):
- ACTV: urban service with intermediate stops (slower)
