Enjoy and Respect Venice: How to Make Your Family Trip Sustainable

Venice is a stunning but fragile city, built on small islands connected by canals and bridges, and home to fewer than 50,000 residents.
Every year, tens of millions of visitors come to Venice, which can have a significant impact on daily life in the city if tourism is not managed responsibly.

Visiting Venice in a more conscious and sustainable way helps protect its beauty for future generations — including our children.

To better understand how to respect the city during your stay, we recommend reading our post The City Rules to Enjoy and Respect Venice on Your Family-Friendly Trip and following the guidelines promoted by the City of Venice as part of the Enjoy Respect Venezia campaign.

Everyone Can Do Their Part

Maintaining a unique city like Venice is complex and costly, and visitors are also asked to contribute.

Overnight visitors pay a tourist accommodation tax, which is included in the cost of their hotel, B&B or apartment stay.

Day visitors, including families visiting Venice for just one day, are required to pay the Venice Access Fee, which helps manage tourist flows and support the city.

Venice Access Fee: Who Pays, How and When

The Venice Access Fee applies to visitors who enter Venice for the day, generally between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm.

For 2026, the access fee is:

  • €5 if booked in advance (up to the fourth-to-last day before your visit)
  • €10 if purchased within the last four days before entry

Payment is mandatory and must be made online on the official website.
Alternatively, it can also be purchased at authorised tobacco shops (tabacchi).

Once paid, you will receive a QR code, which you may be asked to show to public officers during checks.

Children and exemptions

  • Children under 14 are not required to pay or register
  • You may simply be asked to show an ID if requested by public officers

The fee applies only on certain days of the year — 60 days in 2026 — during peak tourist periods.
This measure helps reduce overcrowding and encourages visitors to explore Venice during quieter months.

To check the exact dates when the access fee applies, always refer to the official City of Venice website.
