The best gelato in Venice:
a family-friendly guide for kids and parents
Italian Gelato – A Must for Families Visiting Venice
After hours of walking across bridges, exploring narrow streets and discovering Venice with children, there is one magical word that makes everyone smile instantly: gelato.
In Italy, gelato is a true food institution. Loved by kids and adults alike, it is a fresh, natural and nourishing treat, perfect during hot summer days but enjoyed by visitors all year round. For families travelling with children, gelato is often the perfect reward, a small break and sometimes even a lifesaver 😉
Venice, like all Italian cities, is full of gelaterias. But how can you recognise the best gelato in Venice, especially when travelling with kids?
How to Choose Good Gelato in Venice
The secret lies in artisanal production and high-quality ingredients.
The best gelato is usually made fresh every day, with natural flavours and a limited selection.
Very bright colours, huge mountains of ice cream and endless flavour lists may look attractive, especially to children, but they don’t always mean quality. When possible, choose small gelaterias that focus on craftsmanship rather than quantity.

Our favourite gelato stops
Nico (Dorsoduro)
Founded in 1937, Nico is a true Venetian icon. The legendary gianduiotto — a bar of gianduia gelato topped with whipped cream — is an absolute must-try.
The location makes it even more special: grab a cone and walk along the Zattere waterfront, or sit at the outdoor tables overlooking the Giudecca Canal. A moment parents will love just as much as kids.
Mela Verde (Castello)
Just a short walk from St. Mark’s Square, this tiny gelateria packs an explosion of flavour into a very small space. There is no seating — gelato is take-away only — making it perfect for families exploring the city on foot.
Other Great Gelaterias Around Venice:
If you are staying in other areas of the city, these are also excellent options:
- Il Pinguino, Riva San Biasio (Castello)
- Suso, Sotoportego de la Bissa (San Marco)
- Il Doge, Campo Santa Margherita & Campiello San Tomà (Dorsoduro)
- Gelateria Gallonetto, Salizada San Lio (Castello)
To slow down and enjoy the atmosphere, we also love sitting down for a gelato at Rosa Salva in Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo. From here you can admire one of the most beautiful squares in Venice, surrounded by local life and authentic Venetian charm.
Mini gelato vocabulary: ordering like a local
When you order gelato in Italy, you’ll usually hear:
“Cono o coppetta? Quante palline? Che gusti?”
Which means: “Cone or cup? How many scoops? Which flavours?”
- Cup (coppetta): easier to manage, especially for younger children
- Cone (cono): perfect for walking around — and usually the favourite of experienced gelato lovers 😉 Just be quick and keep some napkins handy!
Scoops usually come in 1, 2 or 3, depending on how hungry you are… and how many Venetian bridges you’re willing to walk afterwards 😄
Classic and Creative Gelato Flavours to Try:
Popular classic flavours include:
- Stracciatella (vanilla with chocolate chips)
- Chocolate
- Fiordilatte (milky cream)
- Lemon
- Strawberry
- Pistachio (pronounced “pistàkio” in Italian!)
For something more adventurous, try:
- Tiramisù
- Crema del Doge
- Caramel
- Or unique flavour combinations that change daily and showcase the creativity of Italian gelato makers.
Exploring gelato flavours is a delicious way to explore Italy itself — one scoop at a time.
